Let’s chat hair tools. I have made a video review of the Tymo heated hair straightening brush when it was a start up brand selling on amazon only. It was not the first one of its kind, but it was the best of its kind. The difference being, older heated brushes are shaped like a paddle brush and new heated brushes are shaped like a comb. It is more than just a cosmetic change. The performance between the two tyes ot technologies is night and day. Let’s get into this review, it’s an exiting one.

Our Rating Criteria

Promises vs. Performance: How well will this $60 hair straightener brush perform?

Since 2019, TYMO RING has been the best selling hair straightener brush in the U.S. with over 500,000 units sold. TYMO Hair Straightening Brush features 5 temperature levels between 266°F – 410°F to suit different hair types while having an ‘Anti-Scald’ design so that you can more carefully reach more roots of your hair. It features a 360° swivel powder cord, 30 minute auto shut-off, and a fast 60 second heat up. Each tooth/plate is heated with PTC (positive temperature coefficient) Heat Technology to ensure even heat distribution as you comb through hair, allowing better results for shinier, healthier, silkier hair.

My Review Thoughts on Tymo Hair Straightening Brush

It was a pleasure to review Tymo hair straightening brush. It is phenomenal for achieving a smooth, sleek look on all hair types, but especially curly, thick, and coarse. The secret is in the shape of the comb plates. Again, the Tymo hair straightener brush works because of the comb plate/bristle shape. I have to say it twice because other brands have changed the shape and degraded the performace of the heated brush. The shape is unique with its 3D triangular-shaped plates that comb through the hair, lightly grabbing strands as it glides through. There is a perfect amount tension in the hair as you glide Tymo through the hair. If you are going to remember anything from this review, please remeber this paragraph.

For best results, use a bit of tension as if you’re using a regular comb. In our experience, TYMO Straightener Brush works better than all other heated brushes and combs because of its 3D teeth and how it holds and glides through the hair. It glides smoothly, providing instantaneous results that rival that of a flat iron. What makes it even better is that it works on all hair types and has customizable temperature control to tailor styling.

Note: The price of TYMO RING varies from $49.99 – $59.99 depending on which retailer you purchase from.

TYMO Ring Plus Review hair straightener review

TYMO has released an updated version of their popular and original TYMO ring hair straightener. During my testing and review the two things i thought could be updated they have. Outstanding! We are talking about updated materials and controls.

Upgraded material.

They have upgraded to titanium plating, which is a faster heat transfer material. It’s a big plus because when you glide the brush through the hair, it needs a fast and responsive material to keep up.

They claim to have negative ion technology, which is probably from the ceramic plated prongs, plus the negative ion generator. It is a welcome technology that helps break down any moisture on top of hair cuticles and inside the hair shaft. Also, if the hair is textured there will be some static energy from constant friction between the hair stands. Negative ions would deal with it, making the hair more manageable and smooth. Another outstanding feature!

WORD OF CAUTION!

It is not advisable to run this tool through the hair many times. Please use heat protectant, and more so, please use a great hair conditioner to lock-in hair moisture. Heated irons and/or brushes do not promote hair moisture, no matter how marketers try to spin it – they simply get rid of any access moisture that maybe on top of the hair cuttles and some inside the hair shaft (if the hair lacks moisture it will continue to lack moisture, not matter the tool one uses).

Cuticles open and close based on the amount of moisture in the hair. It is not based on the heat or negative ions that are thrown at the hair. You will notice that hair gets freeze in hot humid weather (it’s the moisture not the heat that has the major impact). If you go into a dry climate, the cuticles will close without any tool(s) – its just going to take a bit longer :).

So, hot flat irons and hair straightening brushes work because they evaporate moisture from the hair. Negative ions work because they breakdown water molecules which evaporate easily (but some heat is needed to evaporate them, hopefully above the dew point). Controlling evaporation process is very important. Hot tools can evaporate too much moisture and leave hair dry and lifeless. Furthermore, anything above 300F raises the risk of permanent heat damage. Using a good tool with proper technology is advisable. Also, less is more when it comes to frequency of heat application on the hair.

Let’s get back to the rest of the review of the Tymo hair straightener brush.

Upgraded control.

The second thing I thought would be a nice upgrade is controls. Ring plus comes with digital controls with many temperature settings. Brilliant! I’m not sure what else can be upgraded to make this tool perfect at this price point. If you are looking for a heated hair brush straightener this is it – >>> BUY IT HERE! <<<

How It Compares: TYMO Hair Straightening Brush outperforms all others.

I am pleasantly surprised with how well this hair straightener brush works! What sets the TYMO Hair Straightening Brush apart from others is the 3D triangular-shaped plates that grab the hair, creating tension as it glides through. It works in just one pass to create sleek, smooth, frizz-free results on any hair type – even thick, coarse, and curly hair! I’ve tried several other hair straightener brushes and no other compare to the performance and results quite like the TYMO RING. The only thing that works better is an actual flat iron itself! Yes, you heard me right, if you want sleek results, there is no comparison to a flat iron.

However, this is perfect for those with textured and or curly hair. It’s a heated comb hair tool. It is very convenient and it provides surprising results. There is no need for an extra hair comb or brush if using a flat iron which can be a hassle. Plus, if you are not looking for pin straight hair style, this tools will get you what you want – straightened hair with some volume.

Comparison To Other Heated Hair Brushes

Best Heated Hair Brush Straightener

Recently I noticed that other brands are starting to make their versions of the Heated Straightening Brush (the comb shape). L’ange is a notable version, and Shark came out with an interesting tool that took the comb elements and incorporated into the tool. Check out an article on that. Of course, there are amazon versions that are starting to pop up. Let’s walk though some of these and review them against the original Tymo heated hair straightening brush.

Rifny Heated Hair Brush

There are two other heated hair straightening brush options on the market. One sits in the value category like TYMO and the other in the pro-grade category. The first hair straightener brush is from RIFNY, which is available on Amazon and very similar in design to the TYMO RING. But, this one isn’t as smooth when gliding through the hair. It can tug and snag the hair as you glide it through. It does still have 3 different temperature settings to tailor styling to your specific hair type. The plates do allow you to get pretty close to the root. And there’s no burning hair smell!

I already mentioned it in the review above, The big difference between the Tymo and Rifny hair straightening brushes is the actual geometry of the prongs. It makes a significant difference when it comes down to results. The overall shape may look the same but do not be fooled by the external packaging. there are only two heated brushes that we have found on amazon that actually are similar internally. Both of these heated brushes are mentioned above.

However, there are very similar brushes with similar prongs – Padcist Heated Hair Brush and EZBASICS heated brush. Both of these are from amazon.

L’ange Smooth-it Comb Straightener Review/Comparison

L’ange just launched their own version of the tool. Looks like they have upgraded controls and maybe materials as well. They simply state that the materials include negative ion technology in them. This could mean anything from simple ceramic, upgraded turmaline ceramic, or even further down the line – ceramic infused with turmaline and graphene. It is safe to assume that it is the former – ceramic plates or simply ceramic plated pongs. Which could be safer in certain situations.

Overall, if you are a fan of L’ange hair tools, this is a great option.

GHD Glide Hair Straightener

The second option is the GHD Glide Smoothing Hot Brush. This one retails for a bit more at $169 and is definitely not worth its high price tag. For starters, it’s design is heavier and doesn’t feel as ergonomic. Secondly, it only has a single temperature setting – 365°F. This hair tool gets hot, and it’s really easy to burn your fingers. And, finally, the results just aren’t as good. Fo a $169 hair tool, I expected sleek, smooth, frizz-free results, but that didn’t happen. I had to go over my hair a few times to get it fully smooth, it doesn’t go all the way to the root, and it’s hard to shape the end of your hair. Between the control, performance, and results, I can’t put my stamp of approval on this hair straightener brush.

Overall, the heated paddle brush design does not compare to the heated comb brush design. The paddle brush design is outdated, and it has being replaced with the comb brush design, in my humble opinion.

Hair Straightening Brush Alternatives

If you are looking for the best drugstore straightener overall, look no further than Kristin Ess Titanium Flat Iron. For the price, the performance can’t be beat. The titanium plates deliver even heat distribution for faster, more even styling and true one-pass results. The flexing plates auto-adjust to hair texture for smoother styling without snags or creases. This hair tool makes it easy to achieve multiple styles, whether straight, curly, or wavy. You can really customize your hairstyle with the 4 temperature settings up to 440°F depending on your hair texture, whether you color/bleach your hair, or you just don’t like high heat.

And if you’re looking for the ultimate hair tool, the safest hair tool, and the most versatile hair tool, I recommend the Dyson Airwrap. It dries hair, smooths flyaways, creates the perfect blowout, and curls hair. The curling barrels are also semi-automatic, using something called Coanda Technology to attract hair, safely wrapping it around the barrels. Plus, it doesn’t use damaging heat.
