Tom Ford foundation is expensive with a ton of claims. Will it be good?
Tom Ford is home to several favorite products of mine, from the Shade and Illuminate Cream Contour to Lip Color, and the most precise liquid liner. I feel like Tom Ford is a luxury brand that, albeit expensive, never lets me down. Included in those I love is Traceless Soft Matte Foundation. Typically, I’m not a huge fan of more matte finishes, but this Tom Ford foundation formula is one I quite enjoy. It has a gorgeous soft matte finish that still lets my natural skin radiance shine through. Traceless Soft Matte makes my complexion look flawless and it’s one of the most comfortable matte foundations I have in my collection. So, let’s dive into the Tom Ford Traceless Soft Matte Foundation Review.
Promises vs. Performance: This Tom Ford foundation has a “modern matte finish.”
Traceless Soft Matte promises to never look flat, cakey, or dry. It has an all day, comfortable wear that stays “color true” for up to 10 hours, all while resisting fading, humidity, and sweat. The formula contains soft-focus microsphere powders and wear-extending pigments that blur imperfections and give a buildable medium to full coverage. Tom Ford promises a soft and silky texture that looks like skin and moves like skin on. Best of all, Traceless never settles, never looks flat, and never looks cakey. And, there’s some skincare benefits included, too: hyaluronic acid helps hydrate, and vitamin C, E, and caffeine treat skin to improve texture over time. Coming in 40 shades, Tom Ford promises this to be a “modern matte finish foundation” that is feels natural and looks flawless.
Review Thoughts: Tom Ford Traceless Soft Matte Foundation
I love that I can apply this foundation with either a brush or sponge, depending on what kind of look and coverage I want. If I’m wanting a natural, glowy look, I take my dampened sponge to apply. If I’m wanting that full coverage, full glam look, I take a brush. Both applications are easy, seamless, and provide even coverage. I typically take one to two pumps of this foundation depending on how much coverage I want.
Immediately after applying, I am met with a blurred, soft focus finish that still looks like my skin. Because the formula is infused with hyaluronic acid, it doesn’t have that flat, cakey look that some matte foundations tend to have. It feels super lightweight on the skin and wears beautifully all day long, even in the heat and humidity. I’ve worn this foundation on humid outdoor walks and, let me tell you, it was put to the test in the Tennessee heat. But, it still looked just as even afterwards and I didn’t feel like I needed to touch-up. It doesn’t settle or look greasy. Though I do find I can get a bit extra shiny by the end of the day, especially on my forehead, this is normal for me with just about any foundation.
Quick Rating Rundown
Let’s Review How It Compares: For a matte foundation, I love Tom Ford Traceless Soft Matte
There’s just something about this Tom Ford foundation that I love. From the way it applies to the way it wears, I can’t ever get enough of it. It has a stunning soft matte finish, yet a hydrating formula that keeps me looking glowy and fresh all day long. Traceless Soft Matte applies easily with a brush or sponge, and the coverage is a buildable medium to full depending on how many pumps you use. I love how easily it blurs my imperfections while still looking like skin on. It never feels heavy or looks cakey. Resistant to heat and humidity, this foundation is perfect for the summer months (trust me, I’ve tried it in the Tennessee heat!).
I don’t recommend luxury products often and still think this one is crazy expensive, but, if you’re looking for a beautiful matte foundation, this one is worth every penny of its $90 price tag.
My favorite luxury foundations.
This formula goes neck and neck with my holy grail Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk (rated **** 4.4). Though, I love both of these luxury foundations for different reasons. When I’m wanting a more matte look, I reach for Tom Ford Traceless. When I’m wanting a glowy look, I reach for Armani Luminous Silk.
In my opinion, Luminous Silk is still the best high end foundation. It’s a bit more affordable than the Tom Ford foundation ($65 versus $90), and it’s a holy grail product for many because of its unrivaled performance. Luminous Silk provides buildable medium to full coverage that feels lightweight on the skin. It gives a luminous, natural looking complexion that is even, with imperfections concealed and blurred. The wear is unmatched, as it truly looks flawless all day long.

Milabu Beauty Method: Have an outdoor, summer event? Here’s how to get a glam look that lasts.
- I don’t find that a primer is necessary for this foundation. But, if you want to ensure this foundation lasts as best as it can, I would pair a gripping primer underneath. Benefit Porefessional ($32) is one of my go-to’s.
- While the primer is drying down for a few moments, go ahead with 1-2 pumps of foundation on the back of your hand. Careful, though! Traceless Soft Matte is very liquidy!
- Swipe dots of foundation across your face evenly.
- Now, take your application tool of choice and blend!
- If you want more coverage, dot more foundation where you wish to build coverage. Use tapping motions to ensure not to disturb the layer below.
- Before continuing to the next step, apply any cream products (contour, blush, highlight).
- Keep the shine at bay longer by adding a powder overtop. I love the lightweight formula of Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder ($46).
- Finally, lock everything in with a setting spray. I always love the finish Hourglass Veil Soft Focus ($48) gives my look.
Tip: For natural coverage, use a dampened Beautyblender ($20). For fuller coverage, use a dense, dome shaped brush. My favorite is the Bobbi Brown Full Coverage Face Brush ($52).
