I’ve tried so many mascaras, so I’ve seen my fair share of different mascara wands. They come in all different shapes and sizes. For instance, some wands are full, holding lots of bristles. Others are hourglass shaped, with larger tops and bottoms and a skinny middle. There are tapered wands that get smaller at the top. Or slightly curved wands that are great for lifting lashes. But of all the mascara wands I’ve tried, I’ve never seen one exactly like R.e.m. Beauty Flourishing Volumizing Mascara. This custom wand has three separate sections and two channels of empty space.

So what did I think about this mascara’s wand and formula? Let’s find out.

Promises vs. Performance: This mascara is made for maximum lash lift-off.

This is a volumizing and nourishing mascara that should never clump but should always produce intense lashes. According to R.e.m.’s website, the custom wand amplifies the volumizing properties. The “perfectly spaced channels” collect and deposit pigment for “maximum lash lift-off.” This mascara’s clean formula includes ingredients like bamboo powder, Tahitian micro algae, and fruit extracts.

Overall, I the wand of this mascara was different. While I appreciate how unique it is, it is difficult to work with. Before applying this mascara, I need to wipe off some of the extra product that gets clumps in the spaces between the sections. But once applied, I am met with super intense, dark lashes. This volumizing mascara adds the dark pigment and extra volume I always crave.

After a full day of wear, this mascaras has minimal flaking with no smudging or transfer. I’m pleased with this wear of this mascara, but it isn’t my all time fave.

How It Compares: What’s the best mascara?

The best mascara, hands down, is the Lancome Lash Idôle (rated ****4.4). While I’m still going to use up my tube of R.e.m. Volumizing Mascara, the wand just isn’t my cup of tea. To compare the two mascara wands, R.e.m.’s is straight and has three separate sections of bristles. Lash Idôle, however, has a curved wand that deposits the perfect amount of product while lifting lashes. It also never flakes on me, and always looks flawless at the end of the night. It’s not only the best volumizing mascara in professional grade beauty, but, to me, it’s the best mascara overall.

I like to wear both the lengthening and volumizing versions on my top lashes. According to R.e.m. Beauty, combing lashes with both mascara wands takes lashes to the next level.

1. Start with the Lengthening Mascara ($15). Gently comb this mascara’s silicone bristles through the tips of lashes, keeping the roots bare.
2. Before applying the Volumizing Mascara, use the edges of the tube to remove some of the excess product gathered in the spaces of the wand. This helps avoid clumping.
3. Then, apply the Volumizing Mascara. Combing the bristles from root to tip, completely coat lashes.
4. Use either of these mascaras on your bottom lash line. If mascara tends to get messy on you, the lengthening version’s wand may be easier. Hold the wand horizontally across your lashes. Then use zigzagging motions to coat.
