Kulfi Underlined Kajal Eyeliner: 5 stunning shades with a creamy formula.

Founded by Priyanka Ganjoo, Kulfi is a beauty brand that is redefining standards. In her years in the beauty industry helping brands grow, she rarely saw South Asians represented. Kulfi was born on Ganjoo’s journey of “rediscovering the joy in makeup,” and as a homage to her roots to celebrate culture and beauty. The brand’s first product, Underlined Kajal Eyeliner, actually landed itself an AllureBest of Beauty‘ award in 2021, the same year it launched. Talk about impressive!

Fun fact: Kulfi is actually a type of South Asian ice cream!

Promises vs. Performance: I hope this is a smudge proof eyeliner.

According to Kulfi Beauty’s website, “bye bye raccoon eyes!” These kajal eyeliners are supposed to be highly pigmented, longwearing, smudge proof, and waterproof. Underlined Eyeliner contains moisturizing aloe vera and Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant. The formula is vegan and cruelty free. You can buy the retractable eyeliner individually for $20, or in a set of five for $85.

Oooh, these colors are stunning! I grabbed the set of Kulfi Beauty Underlined liners, which contain all five shades. They are all so pretty! The formula is creamy and they are super pigmented. For the test I did on the Milabu Channel (subscribe here), I chose the shades Nazar No More and Rain Check, the black and blue colors. Going all out with these liners, I did a fun winged look layered with both the blue and black colors. I also tested the eyeliner in my waterline to see how it wore, as Kulfi claims it doesn’t budge from the waterline. The liners glided on smoothly with little effort and could even be used like a gel liner, picking up product with a small angled brush for even more precision.

I was super excited to see how these performed, but, unfortunately, they just didn’t hold up to the claims in this wear test. Part of the problem may have been not use a standard eyeshadow primer, but instead used the ISLA Face Base Priming Moisturizer. That could have been where I went wrong with this trial. I definitely want to keep playing with these more and see if I can make them work. The colors and formula are just too pretty!

How It Compares: MAC Kohl is the best eyeliner.

I definitely want to keep playing around with these eyeliners. I love the colors and formula, but my first wear test just didn’t live up to the claims. Like I said, this could be in part to using the ISLA Face Base on my eyelids instead of a normal eyeshadow primer (like Urban Decay Primer Potion). I’ll report back.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for the best eyeliner, MAC Kohl is superior on many levels. It is actually smudge proof, long wearing, and the formula is super creamy. These are more versatile and work with just about any (or no) base at all. I think these are a much better buy as they are a tried and true, reliable product.

Milabu Beauty Method: Create a fun, double winged liner.

  1. First, make sure to prime the eyes to avoid smudging! My favorite is Urban Decay Primer Potion ($24).
  2. Swipe a neutral eyeshadow across your eyelids. We’re just going to use a single shade for this look. The shade ‘Gamine’ from Alima Pure ($30) is what I used for this look.
  3. Now it’s time for liner! Start with the black eyeliner. Begin drawing your wing and tracing along your upper eyelid. Remember to keep this thin as we’re also using the blue eyeliner.
  4. Next, trace along the top of the black line with the blue eyeliner.
  5. Apply the black liner to your lower lash line, and the blue liner to your waterline.
  6. Top of with your favorite mascara. Mine is this one ($27) from Lancome!

Tip: To get an even more precise line and wing, go in with a small angeled eyeliner brush. I really like this one ($22) from Seint.
