ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara: Is This The Best Natural Mascara?

As clean beauty becomes more mainstream, it’s exciting to come across brands that deliver not only natural, but also high performing products. ILIA is no exception, and their natural mascara has occupied a place in my makeup bag for some time. Having won the Best Clean Mascara Award from Allure twice, this cult favorite clean product is widely said to give great lift, length, and separation, all while being nourishing. I took a little break from Limitless Lash Mascara recently. After all, I keep my lashes busy with my wear tests! But I recently tried it again with a full face of ILIA makeup products.

So just how limitless is it?

Promises vs. Performance: The length is limitless, but what about the lash curl? 

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara is said to lift and curl lashes while being buildable and flake free. Not only that, according to ILIA’s website, the mascara was created to lengthen your natural lashes, giving you the long lashes of your dreams while providing all day wear. In addition to lengthening, Limitless Lash defines and separates lashes while adding subtle, natural volume. There should be no falling flat around here! It contains ingredients such as arginine to fortify lashes, organic shea butter to condition, and beeswax to nourish. The cruelty free formula is ophthalmologist tested, gluten free, and safe for sensitive eyes. 

Limitless Lash Mascara lives up to its name for lengthening and separating my lashes, but not so much for curling them. There are definitely others that outperform this one in the curl and volume department. After 12 hours of wear, there is sometimes a tiny bit of smudging and flaking, but nothing to change my opinion of this as a top performer. It applies easily and gives boundless length. And, when you’re ready to take it off, it lends itself to an easy, tug free removal with just cleanser and water. Sensitive eyes rejoice with this mascara! 

The mascara wand is unique, so keep in mind there is a bit of a learning curve to it. It’s double sided, with one side featuring short bristles said to create volume and curl, and the other featuring comb-like bristles to really define each lash. This wand is patented by ILIA, so there really is no other wand like it on the market. The wand and formula work together to make this a good mascara for short lashes.

How It Compares: Is it the best, or just the best natural mascara?

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara does live up to its cult following hype if you’re looking for the best clean mascara. It has a 4.3 star rating out of more than three thousand reviews on Sephora.com. It is definitely a top performer in the clean beauty world and is a good choice if you’re looking for a lengthening mascara for sensitive eyes. But if you’re looking for the best mascara that does all the things (length, definition, curl, and volume) Lancôme Idole (rated ****4.4) is a better choice.

Milabu Beauty Method: Outsmart the wand.

As we’ve already established, there is a learning curve to this wand. The wand is dual-sided, featuring short bristles on one side with long on the other.

1. Finish your eye look (primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, etc.).
2. Start with the side that has the longer bristles. This will help to separate the lashes and give you length. Make sure to coat each lash.
3. Once each lash is coated, flip over to the short bristled side. Begin combing this through your lashes, making sure to start as close to the base of the lashes as possible. This side will help fill in the gaps, giving your lashes more volume.
4. If desired, add another coat for more drama!
