Gucci Mascara L’Obscur gave me the worst raccoon eyes I’ve experienced in awhile.

I’ve got to say, I love the packaging of Gucci Mascara L’Obscur. It’s a heavier tube, featuring pastel pink tube and gold lid, and, of course, donning the gold Gucci logo. The weight of the tube just makes it feel luxurious (as does its $35 price tag). Now, I hold my luxury products to a higher standard when testing them. I feel like if I’m paying more, it should perform well. In the case of this mascara, I was impressed, but also disappointed. Let me explain.

Promises vs. Performance: I can’t say the long wearing claims hold up for Gucci Mascara L’Obscur…

Volume, length, and curl are the three things L’Obscur promises to give your lashes. The creamy formula claims a buildable, clump free application aided with the flexible, short bristled brush. The soft comb will separate lashes, giving definition “from classic to bold, understated to punk.” Gucci promises Mascara L’Obscur will wear smudge and flake proof for up to 12 hours.

L’Obscur has a stiffer wand with shorter bristles that I’m surprised I enjoy as much as I do. Typically I don’t enjoy short bristles, but the combination of the stiff wand and short bristles makes it easy to apply and really roll the brush through your lashes. The formula applied clump free, separating my lashes really well. I didn’t get as much curl and lift as I expected from the claims, but I got decent volume and length.

I don’t even know how many times I had to clean up mascara smudges under my eyes all day long. Honestly, I haven’t had this bad of a mascara smudging experience in a really long time. I didn’t have any transfer onto my actual eyelids or any flaking, which I was happy about. If I do wear this mascara again, it’ll definitely be only on my top lashes. I’ll wear a formula that doesn’t budge, like Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash or Chanel Le Volume on my lower lashes.

Our Rating Criteria

How Gucci Mascara L’Obscur Compares: I prefer a mascara I can wear on both my top and bottom lashes.

I enjoyed most everything about Gucci Mascara L’Obscur up until it’s wear. Starting with the packaging, I love the pastel pink tube and heavy weight. At application, it was easy to build, free of clumps, and the short, stiff bristles made it easy to apply to the inner corner and bottom lashes. I got volume, length, and separation. But, when it came down to the wear, I had some of the worst raccoon eyes I’ve experienced in a while. I had to constantly clean mascara smudges from under my eyes all day long. I will say, it did not transfer to my eyelids from my top lashes and did not flake.

Realistically, I prefer a mascara I can wear on both my top and bottom lashes, free of smudging, transfer, and flaking. In the luxury category, this is Chanel Le Volume De Chanel (rated ****3.8). This particular Chanel mascara volumizes, lengthens, and fans out my lashes. It, too, applies easily and clump free. But, when it comes to the wear, it’s much more resistant to smudging and transfer (though, some transfer can happen if you don’t set your under eyes!). The high price tag of Le Volume is it’s biggest downfall. If the amount of product matched the price, this would be **** 4.5+ mascara.
