What is it? GHD Chronos Technology

The GHD Chronos Styler 1″ Flat Iron is not just a regular styling tool; it’s an advanced, motion-responsive device designed to revolutionize your hair styling experience. Its cornerstone technology, HD Motion-Responsive Technology, allows the iron to adapt intuitively to your styling movements. This ensures consistent heat distribution at the optimal temperature of 365°F, a temperature scientifically recognized for achieving premium styling results without extreme heat damage.

This flat iron promises not only style but also hair health. It boasts a claim of 85% more shine, 50% less frizz, and thrice the amount of breakage protection compared to conventional flat irons. The high-performance ceramic floating plates are coated with ultra-gloss, ensuring a frizz-free, smooth glide through your hair. The re-engineered wishbone hinge is another notable feature, ensuring the plates remain perfectly aligned for maximum styling control and versatility.

My Review Thoughts on GHD Chronos Flat Iron

Pros:

The GHD Chronos is aesthetically pleasing and feels like a luxury product in hand. Its Predictive HD Motion Technology is a game-changer, ensuring the flat iron adjusts to both hair type and styling motion, providing a personalized styling experience. The smooth glide through the hair is commendable, reducing the effort and time taken for styling. The extra safety circuit protocols incorporated into the design provide peace of mind, especially for users prone to forgetfulness. For those with fine hair, this iron is nothing short of miraculous, delivering outstanding results without damaging delicate strands.

Cons:

However, the GHD Chronos does come with a steep price tag, making it a significant investment. The lack of digital controls may disappoint tech-savvy users who prefer precise temperature adjustments. While it handles fine hair with ease, those with coarse hair might find it less effective. Additionally, the absence of significant negative ion technology, a feature common in many modern flat irons for extra frizz reduction, is a notable omission. Now, let me geek out in the next part of the GHD Chronos review over flat iron technologies.

A Deep Dive into Chronos Motion Technology

From our experience, we would say the new HD Motion technology works very well, better than predictive technology in GHD Platinum Plus. However, it’s very important to understand that, it is geared more toward the safety at the expense of results. There is no straight forward way around this due to GHD’s limitation of 365F temperature setting, for hair safety reasons. They have made the iron respond much quicker but that does not make the hair stands respond quicker.

Let me explain, most users will glide the iron with certain speed, which in it self is a problem because it is not a controlled motion. The Flat Iron has approximately a second to transfer enough heat into the hair strand to get it to style and stay styled. Now if the iron can only go upto 365F (vs 450F of other flat irons), you have put a hard limit on the tool. So, the only way to get the required amount of heat into coarse hair (in comparison to fine hair) is to teach the user to slow down while gliding the flat iron. Now, how much slower? Well that is the problem, how do you tell someone you need to be going .5″ inch per second instead of 1″ per second. What does that mean? Practically speaking? There is too much uncontrolled user variation.

So what do you do?

There are a few things that can be done:

  1. Design the tool for one type of hair
  2. Educate the user how to properly use the tool. It is not enough to control the temperature of the iron
  3. Incorporate more automation in the tool, taking away the control of motion away from the user.

This is a simple list to start with. So let’s go with it. If a brand is more conservative with the spending, they are not going to spend millions on incorporating automation into the tool (which may be too expensive for end users). Educating a user how to properly use the tool. That may be too complicated. Who remembers TYME – they tried to educate. That was a FAIL. We are left with one option, design a tool for one type of hair. And in my humble opinion, I think that was the likely option that was chosen. To create a flat iron for one type of hair – for fine hair.

Flat Irons are not Simple!

It seems like such a simple task, straightening the hair with hot plates. But as you can see, it is a very complex situation due to hair safety, user variation, hair variation, motion dynamics, geometry (hair is round not flat)… That being said, IMO GHD created the best flat iron for one particular type of hair, fine hair. And that is a phenomenal achievement! To accomplish it they had to incorporated some sophisticated pieces of technology into it.

Let’s Review How GHD Chronos Compares to Best Flat Irons.

Bio Ionic 10X is a favorite of mine:

The unique selling point of the Bio Ionic 10X flat iron lies in its innovative vibrating plates. These plates create enhanced surface contact with hair strands, enabling faster and more efficient styling. This feature minimizes the need for multiple passes over the same section of hair, making the Bio Ionic 10X an effective one-pass flat iron. Additionally, the vibrating plates significantly improve its versatility, making it ideal for a range of styles like curls, waves, and flicks, all while maintaining a smooth glide. This distinctive characteristic is a major factor in its standing as a top competitor in the market.

As I mentioned in my video review, the GHD Chronos Flat Iron, despite its merits, falls short in comparison to the results achieved with the Bio Ionic 10X. The GHD might require more passes to attain the same level of shine, but it compensates with advanced safety features designed to prevent hair damage. However, the Bio Ionic 10X doesn’t quite match up in this aspect of extra precautionary measures.

Dyson Corrale vs GHD Chronos

My top pick for hair straightening is the Dyson Corrale. Dyson’s reputation for innovative and cutting-edge technology is well reflected in the Corrale. The standout features of this straightener are its cordless design and unique flexible plates that effectively gather hair during styling. While its battery-powered nature is impressive, the true star feature is the flexible plates. They are the secret behind achieving outstanding results, saying goodbye to frizzy hair!

The Corrale boasts a maximum temperature of 410°F, coupled with intelligent heat control that monitors the temperature 100 times per second, preventing any sudden heat spikes. Here, the GHD also excels – particularly the Chronos Straightener, which impressively measures temperature 250 times per second, ensuring accurate temperature maintenance and the absence of hot spots.

GHD Chronos:

So what else can we say about GHD Chronos Flat Iron in this review? Wishbone hinge is simply an outstanding design feature of GHD. We love it! Hair just finds a way to get snagged in most other (if not all) flat irons. The 250X per second feedback sensors are outstanding, which is better than what Dyson uses in their Corrale Flat Iron. And, it is the prettiest of the them all. Otherwise I hope I’m not overstating or understating this tool – it is the best flat iron for fine hair.

GHD Chronos Flat Iron Dupe:

Everyone loves a good dupe, so I thought I would plug a section into this review about GHD Chronos Flat Iron Dupe. So, if Bio Ionic 10X ($239) or Dyson Corrale ($499) are out of your price range, my favorite value flat iron is the Kristin Ess 3-in-1 straightener. This one retails for $90 and, for the price, provides pretty great results. It features alloy titanium and gold metal for fast heating, and the plates adjust to hair texture to cover more surface area at a time. The temperature goes up to 440°F and has 4 heat settings for customizable styling. On the aesthetics note, Kristen Ess looks like a sister of GHD Chronos.
