Overview

I don’t love the Flypencil Fenty Eyeliner. While it has a great shade range, the application is difficult.

Will Fenty eyeliner blow me away like Gloss Bomb?

You know, not every product of every makeup line is going to be a winner. With a product range like Rihanna’s Fenty makeup line, there’s bound to be a few duds. Unfortunately, her Flypencil eyeliner really misses the mark for me. And, I’m not alone – the Fenty Beauty eyeliner review on Sephora only has 3.4 stars. Let me explain what makes this Fenty eyeliner not-so-great.

Promises vs. Performance: Fenty eyeliner isn’t effortless to apply.

Fenty eyeliner promises to glide on smoothly without dragging or pulling, no retracing necessary. The waterproof formula is not supposed to transfer, fade, or smudge for an all day wear. Flypencil comes in 20 shades from neutrals to bolds across matte, shimmer, metallic, and glitter finishes. The retractable eyeliner has a unique triangle shape that claims easier control when creating anything from a clean wing to a smoky eye.

Shade range? Check. Cute shade names? Also, check. But, this Fenty eyeliner isn’t the easiest to apply – especially to the upper lash line. First, the shape: the triangle shape doesn’t allow for a precise application. Second, the eyeliner has a creamy, but stiff formula that sets fast. It’s hard to layer and blend because the formula starts pilling and flaking. It isn’t the most workable texture when trying to create a wing or smoky eye (I much prefer a creamier kohl/kajal formula).

I will say, Fenty does meet its long wear claims of no fading, smudging, or transferring. The pigment also is dark and intense once it’s warmed up and set on the eyes. However, the formula is a bit flaky, which I think is weird for an eyeliner!

Our Rating Criteria

How It Compares: Urban Decay eyeliner is superior.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil beats Fenty liner for a few reasons. Urban Decay eye pencil has an ultra creamy formula that glides on effortlessly, leaving intense pigment in one swipe. The pencil is great for tightlining, smudging, or even creating wings. It has a playing time of around 30 seconds, which provides enough time to blend. After 30 seconds, it dries to a long lasting finish that won’t flake or smudge. While Fenty’s range of 20 shades is pretty great, Urban Decay eyeliner has an insane 38 shade range that comes in the same intense matte, shimmer, glitter, satin, metallic finishes.
