Overview

Finding full coverage concealers at affordable prices can be difficult. The e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer is one of these products. But, it doesn’t have a perfect 10 performance.

Our Rating Criteria

e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer: Affordable full coverage concealers are hard to find.

Finding affordable concealers with good coverage can be difficult. Most don’t provide the coverage I want. So when I came across the e.l.f. Camo Full Coverage Concealer, I was excited. This concealer makeup claims to be truly full coverage with a matte finish. Allure and Redditors actually dubbed this concealer a Shape Tape dupe. You know how feel about Shape Tape (spoiler alert: I don’t love it), so let’s see if this supposed dupe would wow me.

Promises vs. Performance: This concealer covers my dark circles, but isn’t long lasting.

This concealer has quite a few claims. It’s supposed to have a crease proof, matte finish that lasts for up to 16 hours. The formula shouldn’t settle into fine lines and should cover dark circles easily. It’s infused with avocado oil to moisturize and kaolin clay to control oil and shine. This full coverage concealer is best for normal to oily skin types. The website also mentions that this concealer sets fast and it dries darker than appears.

Shopping for a shade match online can be tricky. I have the shade Fair Beige, is a bit too light. But, I also have the Hydrating Camo Concelear in my collection in a tad darker shade (Light Peach) so I usually layer the two. And the combination does work well!

Application is easy with the large doe foot applicator. I place one dot below my inner corner and one below my outer corner. Even with blending right after applying, the formula sets fast. I have to work quickly to spread the product, as the claims described, so I wasn’t surprised by this. Once smoothed out, this concealer proves to be truly a matte medium to full coverage. It brightens my under eyes and hides my dark circles.

However, after wearing this concealer all day, it does settle into my fine lines. And, while it looks mostly fine from far away, studying the formula up close reveals an aged, sand-like appearance. While I do struggle with dry under eyes, I do wish this formula had worn better throughout the day.

How It Compares: I would choose Instant Age Rewind any day.

While the e.l.f. 16HR Camo Concealer has good coverage, does brighten my under eyes, and hides my dark circles, it doesn’t look great after 8+ hours of wear. The harder to work with formula can look dry and crack and crease, setting into fine lines. It’s not the worst drugstore concealer I’ve used, and is very reminiscent of the cult favorite Tarte Shape Tape in formula, application, and wear.

But, there are several better concealers at the drugstore. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind (rated ****4.1) is a great long lasting full coverage concealer at the drugstore. It feels lightweight while easily covering dark circles without settling into under eye lines. And this product has a 4.4 star review on Amazon, with over 10,000 reviews. To me, this is a holy grail concealer and between its cult following and performance, it is the industry standard drugstore concealer.

Another goodie is the NYX Bare With Me Concealer Serum (rated ****4.3). It has impeccable coverage, feels lightweight on the skin, doesn’t settle into my fine lines, and has an all day wear. Not only is it perfect for concealing under eye circles, but it covers any acne spots and redness, too. A perk of this one is it doesn’t require any setting powder on top.

Milabu Beauty Method: Applying this Camo Concealer to under eyes.

Here are my three steps to matte, full coverage under eyes with the 16HR Camo Concealer.

  1. Prep your under eyes well, especially if you have dry skin. Use a super hydrating moisturizer. I like the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream ($13.40 at Walmart).
  2. Using the large doe foot applicator, place one dot of product below your inner corner and one below your outer corner.
  3. Immediately after applying, start blending with a sponge. I recommend using the Original Beautyblender ($20).

Tip: If you’re prone to mascara smudging or concealer budging, try setting your under eyes with a powder. I recommend the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder ($5.99).
