Overview

Covergirl Lash Blast may not be the best drugstore mascara, but it’s one I still enjoy thanks to the nostalgia factor (and the volume it gives my lashes).

Our Rating Criteria

This Covergirl mascara is a blast from the past.

If you’re like me, you grew up with the original orange Lash Blast Mascara tube. It may have been the first mascara I ever tried, so it’s very nostalgic for me. I couldn’t even begin to count how many tubes of this mascara I’ve been through over the years. There’s just something about it that I’ll always love, and others agree because it has over 9,700 reviews on Ulta.com.

Promises vs. Performance: Despite its flaws, Covergirl Lash Blast is a good mascara.

Lash Blast Mascara promises 10 times more volume instantly. It features a unique spin shape brush that ensures each lash, short or long, gets coated. And, if you’e looking for length, Lash Blast has you covered. Covergirl promises a “show-stopping look” that won’t clump or smudge.

Even though this mascara isn’t the best performer, I still love it (does anyone else use products just for the nostalgia?). This was one of the first mascaras I ever tried and, even after all these years and hundreds of mascaras tested, I still think this is a solid formula. It gives my lashes length and volume, while separating for definition. I think the brush works really well to coat the lashes, but beware that it can clump. I prefer to wipe off the excess before applying.

When it comes to the wear, this isn’t the mascara I’d choose if I need an all day, 10+ hour wear. It can smudge and transfer under the eyes, especially if you don’t set your concealer. But, despite it’s flaws, I always keep one of these orange tubes in my collection for the nostalgia factor alone.

Our Rating Criteria

How It Compares: As much as I love it, there are better formulas out there.

The iconic orange tube still reigns as one of the best drugstore mascara formulas. It gives lashes volume, length, and definition without weighing down lashes. But, it isn’t perfect. The wand, though great for volume, can get clumpy. I find it works best to wipe off the excess product on the ends of the brush before applying. And while Covergirl claims a smudge free wear, I disagree: this formula can transfer and smudge, especially if you don’t set under eye concealer with a powder.

As much as I love the nostalgia of Lash Blast Volume, there’s another drugstore mascara that I think performs better. Maybelline Lash Sensational (rated ****4.6) has become my holy grail drugstore formula. The curved wand helps separate and lift lashes, while the formula provides volume and length. One of the best things about Lash Sensational is that I can wear it all day long without having to worry about flaking, smudging, or transfer. It’s the new iconic mascara on the block.
