Airspun Loose Face Powder: A classic best setting powder.

François Coty‘s name is etched into beauty history, thanks in part to the decades-spanning popularity of his company’s Airspun Loose Face Powder. Launched in 1935, this finely milled formula was revolutionarily lightweight and smoothing to the skin. Ever since, Airspun has been a beauty secret for perfect looking skin by women everywhere. It blurs imperfections and sets base products without caking or cracking. Use it on its own for lightest coverage and shine control. Dust it sparingly over foundation and concealer to set your makeup. Or, apply it more heavily under the eyes and cheekbones for baking and highlighting. With your 2.3 ounces for under $10, you’ll have ample product to play with for minimal wallet impact. Let’s review Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder.

Promises vs. Performance: Extended makeup wear and a velvety smooth finish.

Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder has been perfecting faces with its unique “miscrospun” formula since 1935. It’s rare to come across a cosmetic this timeless. What makes it a favorite across generations? Perhaps it’s the lightweight, velvety texture that blurs away fine lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections. That, and its ability to set makeup flawlessly in place for hours. To enhance its finish, Coty claims that their powder particles are spun with air until they reach “ultimate softness.” It is said to have versatile uses as a setter, baking powder, highlighter, and contour product.

My Review Thoughts: Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder

I have used this product for a while, since I first tried it in a wear test for the Milabu Channel on YouTube. While filming the video, “High End vs Drugstore Makeup Dupe Tutorial,” I used a large fluffy powder brush to swirl Airspun Loose Face Powder beneath my eyes to set my concealer. I also swept it onto my forehead, focusing on the T-zone. A little product went a long way for me to lightly set my makeup. I instantly noticed this powder’s smoothing effect. It blurred my tiny lines and pores and evened everything out.

How It Compares: An impressive drugstore setting powder.

Many people have nostalgic memories of seeing Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder on their grandmothers’ vanities. Even today, its powder puff packaging, distinctive floral scent, and baby soft feel can all be experienced. Its cult status carries on, with more than 61 thousand reviewers on Amazon, where wearers rave about its softness and ability to smooth and perfect the skin. Some even compare this makeup staple to the pricier Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, $39. Timeless, accessible, and high performing, Airspun Loose Face Powder is the standard face setting product of its kind from the drugstore. I particularly enjoy its ability to create a blurred and breathable, but immovable, canvass when I wear it on top of concealer and foundation.

I also like. . .

NARS Light Reflecting Loose Face Powder, $37. I compared this to Airspun Loose Face Powder in my “High End vs Drugstore Makeup Dupe Tutorial” video on the Milabu Channel. The wear test proved Coty’s Airspun to be a great performer, even against one of my favorites, this never-fail NARS powder. NARS might be a beauty splurge, but it sets with a seamlessly smooth finish that erases imperfections like pores and lines. I more than like it!

Beauty Lesson: 3 great ways to use this vintage makeup today.

There are so many relevant uses for the cult beauty classic, Airspun Loose Face Powder. Here are three favorites.

  1. Setting the face. For natural looking, budge proof makeup, top your concealer and foundation with Coty Airspun. Use a fluffy powder brush to gently swirl the powder beneath your eyes, on your forehead, and anywhere you may experience fading or shininess, like around the nose and chin.
  2. Baking and highlighting. Airspun is the preferred baking powder for many people. I like a quick, natural bake. Here’s how: Dip a dampened makeup sponge, like this by Real Techniques, into the powder then apply the powder liberally under your eyes and anywhere else you’d like to set and brighten. Allow the powder to hang out and “bake,” or set, for anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Finally, sweep the excess powder away with a fluffy powder brush.
  3. Blending eye makeup. After applying shadow to your eye crease, dip a small, fluffy eyeshadow brush into the Airspun powder and use it to gently blend out the crease at the edge, toward the brow bone. This will blend and soften the colors for seamless transition.

Tip: For a stronger bake, when you need extended wear, you can leave the powder in place for up to ten minutes. Other areas of the face you can bake include the T-zone, your chin, and around your nose to brighten and combat oil. Also bake beneath cheek products to highlight bronzer and contour.
