What even is a tubing mascara and how does it work?
Before we dive into the performance, let’s quickly review what a tubing mascara is, and how it differs from a regular mascara. Typically, mascaras coat, or paint, each lash with pigment. These can be regular or waterproof formulas. With this painted application, there is more of a chance for clumping, flaking, smudging, and more difficult removal. With a tubing mascara, each lash is encapsulated with tiny, usually water resistant, tubes. These tubes bind to each lash individually and resist running, smudging, clumping, and flaking – even through sweat, tears, rubbing your eyes, or having oily skin. If mascaras have the tendency to do any of these things, despite the formula, and you hate removing waterproof formulas, a tubing mascara may be for you.
Now, let’s dive into the details of Blinc UltraVolume Tubing Mascara, one that made it’s way onto Allure’s Best of Beauty 2021 list.
Quick Rating Rundown
Promises vs. Performance: Blinc Tubing Mascara withstands the elements with an incredible long wear formula.
UltraVolume is the world’s first clean and vegan tubing mascara. It features an ultra long wearing formula that gives you a buildable false lash effect. The is a thermoplastic elastomer eye-shaped wand with dynamic spacing and super soft fibers to assist in giving volume and length. As a tubing mascara does, this one promises to be free of clumping, flaking, running, and smudging due to oily skin, sweat, or even crying. The non irritating formula is safe for contact lens wearers and those with sensitive eyes. And, when it’s time to removal, all you need is warm water. Using your hands or a washcloth, it’s easy to remove every last bit of mascara with no tugging and no residue left behind, making it healthier for your eyes and lashes.
I’ve got to say, I really enjoy this mascara. This is one of the first I’ve been impressed with as a whole since Lancome’s Lash Idole, truthfully. I like that this formula isn’t as wet as most tubing mascaras, making it easy to apply and work with. When applying, it doesn’t clump and gives me instant drama. My lashes look long, full, and glam with this mascara formula. I love how intense the black pigment is, too.
This mascara is a winner! I am super impressed by Blinc UltraVolume, from application to wear. As I always hope for, I get no flaking, smudging, or running. My lashes stay in full glam mode until I’m ready to remove my makeup (thank you, tubing mascara!).
How It Compares: This is one of the first mascaras I’ve fully enjoyed since discovering my holy grail Lancome.
If you’re looking for a phenomenal tubing mascara, don’t sleep on this one from Blinc. UltraVolume features a formula that is easy to apply and coat each lash with. Instantly, it gives me bold, defined, volumized lashes – which I love! It truly has the false lash effect as claimed. And, it wears all day. I’m always wowed by the longevity of tubing mascaras since they wear beautifully, even withstanding sweat, without being waterproof. I’ve got to say, this one impresses me.
I mentioned this is the first that truly impressed me since I discovered Lancome Lash Idole. There’s some similarities and some differences between the two. First, Blinc’s formula is a tubing one, whereas Lancome’s is not. That being said, Lash Idole still has an incredible all day wear that, on me, does not smudge or flake. It goes on without clumping, and gives me that same false lash effect of bold, dramatic lashes.
The final verdict.
What I will say is if you’re looking for a tubing mascara specifically, or a clean mascara, I’d choose Blinc over Lancome. But, truthfully, I don’t think you could go wrong with either of these mascaras. I love the way they both make my lashes look and enjoy wearing both.
You don’t have to follow all of these steps, but these are my best practices
- Curl lashes. A lash curler I recommend is this one from Kevyn Aucoin ($21).
- Use a lash primer. I love the way lash primers make my mascara go on. I can use less product and they help keep my lashes looking curled all day long. Lancome Cils Booster XL ($28) is one of the best I have tried.
- Mascara time! Start at the base of your lashes. Wiggle the wand from side to side as you comb through root to tip. Repeat with as many coats to build additional volume. To build length, focus just on the tips of your lashes.
- For lower lashes, I find it best to hold the wand vertically and apply lash by lash.
- When you’re ready to remove, all you need is some warm water and gentle pressure. The tubes will slide off your hands as you gently use your fingertips or a washcloth to gently remove. Remember, makeup removers alone will not remove! Warm water is a must.
